Day Tour Itinerary

After an early morning departure, we travel to the Rheinstein Castle, considered one of the most beautiful castles on the Rhine. In the Castle Museum you find an impressive art collection (entry fee included).

We'll then depart for the medieval town of Bacharach, fortified with 16 watchtowers. Above is the Staufen fortress Stahleck which has been converted into a youth hostel. You may explore the town on your own, visit the famous Jost Beer Stein Factory Outlet and the "Woodburning House" or enjoy a quick snack (not included) in one of the quaint restaurants surrounding the Market Place.

We then board our boat and head downstream - passing such historical monuments as: the 13th Century Gutenfels Castle, towering above the turreted town of Kaub; the Pfalz, a former island toll castle; the 10th Century Schönburg Castle which overlooks the summer resort town of Oberwesel; and the mythical Loreley Cliff. Nearby you can see where legend has it that seven virgins were turned into rocks because they were so cold-hearted.

Our ship turns around at St. Goar (founded in 570) / St. Goarshausen, and then heads upstream - passing additional sights: the village of Trechtingshausen, overlooked by the more than 1000 year old Reichenstein Castle, destroyed in 1282 by Rudolf von Habsburg and now the home of valuable art treasures; the Mäuseturm ("Mice Tower"), once an island toll and customs tower, the legendary monument is now used as a signal tower; the lively town of Bingen and then the docking at Rüdesheim, the most popular wine center on the Rhine River - and particularly noted for its Drosselgasse, the narrow, cobblestone street lined with interesting shops, restaurants and wine-tasting taverns.

You may also be able to see the Niederwald Monument and the statue of Germanis situated 225 meters above the Rhine. There is time to stroll a bit, have dinner (€15.50) or sample some of the regional wines (€7) before we must board the bus for the journey home, arriving at points of origin late at night and early morning.
