Normandy, 2 Overnight
NORMANDY - A land destined to play a major role in both the changing of Europe and the entire world. It's history began when Julius Caesar's Romans conquered the Celtic Tribes in 56 BC; later, the then ruthless Viking Norsemen invaded in AD 820 and, in AD 911, Viking leader Rollo became the first Duke of Normandy under the Treaty of St-Claire-sur-Epte. In 1066, from the beaches of Normandy, Duke William (the Conqueror) invaded England and was eventually crowned King on Christmas Day, altering the course of England dramatically. 878 years later, Allied Forces crossed the English Channel on 6 June 1944 (D-Day), landing on the Normandy beaches in the biggest movement of military manpower in history. In less than 3 months, Normandy was liberated, but the effect was devastating as whole towns disappeared and the landscape was forever scarred, if not destroyed. The Normans faced the enormous task of reconstruction - and through patience, stubborness and the maintaining of traditions and values, this bountiful, cultural and most serene region is once again regaining its past - a renewed past of charm, ideals and indigenous nostalgia that continually lures its visitors.
ITINERARY
2 Overnight Itinerary
DAY 1: Afternoon and evening departure from various pick-up points.
DAY 2: After a breakfast stop (not incl) we'll arrive at the medieval monastery of Mont-Saint Michel, one of the great architectural wonders of France. Located offshore near the Brittany / Normandy border, there is time to visit the pilgrimage abbey (entry fee not incl). Continuing along Avranches and St. Lo through the Normandy countryside, renowned for its cheeses, fresh cream, apple cider and Calvados (the famous apple brandy), we visit the Cathedral City of Bayeux, the first city liberated after the Normandy Landings. Noted for its 15th and 16th Century mansions and its Gothic Cathedral (dedicated in 1077). The oldest tapestry (231 ft. long - entry extra) of France depicting the channel crossing of William the Conqueror and the 1066 Norman Conquest of England (entry extra). Our last stop will be the village of Benouville to view the famous Pegasus Bridge and the Pegasus Bridge Museum (entry extra) named after the insignia (Flying Horse) worn by the 6th British Airborne Division which liberated the structure. We then check in to our hotel. In the evening your tourguide can arrange for a savory dinner featuring French specialties (approx. €30).
DAY 3: We begin the day traveling to Utah Beach, where the 4th Division disembarked and the 00-km marker of the "Liberty Highway". It's then on to Saint-Mère-L'Église, the first French town freed by the 82nd Airborne Divisions, home of the Airborne and C-47 Museums (entry extra) and "Milestone 0" of the "Liberty Highway", the route the Allied Forces took to Bastogne. We continue east to Pointe du Hoc where LTC James Rudder's 2nd Rangers scaled the 100 foot cliffs. Traveling further along the rugged Normandy coast, we stop at Omaha Beach, where the heaviest D-Day casualties were incurred. Here, the 1st and 29th Inf. Divisions performed the most difficult task under the heaviest barrages from the German defenders. At Omaha Beach we will visit on the Museums (entry extra) dedicated to the remembrance of the GI's that stormed this beach on D-Day. Overlooking Omaha Beach, the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mere is our next destination. Nearby, atop the cliffs, are the remains of the German Longues Batteries, well-preserved casements still armed with guns. We then visit the seaside resort village of Arromanches-les Bains, where the artificial port Mulberry B supported the Allies for almost half a year. You may opt to visit the exhibition of the landing of the Allied Forces on June 6th, 1944 at the historic Mulberry Museum (entry extra). Do some last minute souvenir shopping before we have dinner at Arromanches (not incl) and then return to the hotel. The evening is free for own activities.
LAST DAY: We depart early for the town of Rouen, the capital of Normandy, with it's many churches and the large Cathedral, a masterpiece in Gothic architecture and its spire being the seconds tallest in Europe. Do your last minute shopping or see the site where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake before we begin our return journey to Germany. Enroute (and time permitting) we'll take a brief orientation tour of Paris, pointing out some of the major attractions of this captivating city, before we arrive at points of origin late at night after dropping off those picked up enroute at onset of tour.
