VERDUN & NORMANDY - Military History Tour
ITINERARY
2 Overnight Itinerary
Day 1: Early morning departure from various pick-up points. Upon arrival in the town of Verdun, we take an orientation tour prior to our visit to the National Cemetery of Verdun. 15, 000 graves of identified French soldiers, German guns and the Monument to the Executed can be seen when entering. In the center are the graves of the Unknown Soldiers. In front of the civilian graveyard is the Monument to the Airmen where 16 members of the resistance were shot in 1944. After some free time for souvenir shopping and lunch, it's on to Normandy where we check in to our First Class Hotel in the Caen / Bayeux area. The rest of the evening is free for your own activities.
Day 2: We begin the day travelling to Utah Beach, where the 4th Division disembarked. It's then on to Saint-Mère-L'Église, the first French town freed by the 82nd Airborne Divisions, home of the Airborne and C-47 Museums (entry extra) and "Milestone 0" of the "Liberty Highway", the route the Allied Forces took to Bastogne. We continue east to Pointe du Hoc where LTC James Rudder's 2nd Rangers scaled the 100 foot cliffs. Travelling further along the rugged Normandy coast, we stop at Omaha Beach, where the heaviest D-Day casualties were incurred. Here, the 1st and 29th Inf. Divisions performed the most difficult task under the heaviest barrages from the German defenders. At Omaha Beach we will visit on the Museums (entry extra) dedicated to the remembrance of the GI's that stormed this beach on D-Day. Overlooking Omaha Beach, the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer is our next destination. We then visit the seaside resort village of Arromanches-les Bains, where the artificial port Mulberry B supported the Allies for almost half a year. You may opt to visit the exhibition of the landing of the Allied Forces on June 6th, 1944 at the historic Mulberry Museum (entry extra). Before returning back to the Hotel there will be time for last minute souvenir shopping. In the evening your tour guide can arrange for a savoury dinner featuring French specialities (€30).
Day 3: After breakfast and hotel check-out we visit the War Museum Musée de l'Armée in Paris, (entry incl.) still today one of the largest military museums in the world with an astonishing collection of different weapons from different time periods. En route we stop at the Ainse-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial located near Belleau Wood and Château Thierry. The town was the focal point of the second battle of the Marne, which ended the last German offensive of World War I. We then begin our return trip to Germany, stopping in the Verdun area for dinner (not incl.), before arriving at points of origin late at night.
